History
The temple was established by local fishermen in honor of Nguyễn Trung Trực, believed to have operated in this area during his final campaigns. It has been rebuilt several times, most recently in the early 2000s, with the community maintaining it through collective effort and donations. Despite its modest scale, it remains one of the oldest and most spiritually significant structures in Cửa Cạn.
Legend
Nguyễn Trung Trực (1838 – 1868) led southern militias against French forces, becoming renowned after burning the French warship Espérance on the Vàm Nhựt Tảo River. Captured on Phú Quốc and executed at age 30, he is remembered for his unbreakable will and immortal declaration:
“Bao giờ người Tây nhổ hết cỏ nước Nam,
Thì mới hết người Nam đánh Tây.”
——————————————————————————————————————
“Only when the Westerners uproot every blade of grass in Việt Nam
Will the Vietnamese cease fighting them.”
Etiquette
Dress respectfully: shoulders and knees covered. Remove shoes before entering the main hall. Speak quietly; incense offerings are welcome at the altar. Avoid flash photography during ceremonies or prayer time.
Local Practices
Locals and visitors come to offer incense, flowers, and prayers to honor Nguyễn Trung Trực’s spirit and his unwavering patriotism. The temple is considered a place of strength, where fishermen and island residents pray for peace, protection, and courage before setting out to sea.
Đình Nguyễn Trung Trực Festival
Every year, the temple joins others across Phú Quốc in celebrating the Đình Nguyễn Trung Trực Festival, from 26 – 28 of the 8th lunar month, featuring offerings, folk performances, and communal meals. Though smaller than the main festival in Gành Dầu, it carries deep emotional resonance for the residents of Cửa Cạn.
