Perched on a rocky outcrop where the Dương Đông River meets the sea, Dinh Cậu is both a spiritual symbol of Phú Quốc and a favorite sunset spot. Visitors climb the stone steps to reach the shrine, where locals pray for safe voyages, good fortune, and prosperity.

History

The first shrine on this site was built in the 17th century, when local fishermen dedicated the rocky headland to divine protectors of the sea. The current temple structure was formally established in 1937 and has since been renovated several times, continuing as one of Phú Quốc’s most important cultural landmarks.

Myth

Many myths surround Dinh Cậu. One well-known tale tells of fishermen long ago who were caught in a fierce storm. At the river’s mouth, a rocky formation suddenly rose, guiding them to safety. Believing it to be a blessing, they built a shrine on the rock to honor the divine powers of the sea.

The temple worships Chúa Ngọc Nương Nương (the Jade Goddess) and her two sons, Cậu Tài (Prince Tài) and Cậu Quý (Prince Quý), who are revered as protectors of fishermen and bringers of safety, peace, and prosperity.

Etiquette

Wear modest clothing—shirts that cover shoulders, and pants or skirts that reach at least the knee. Keep voices low, be respectful with photos, and avoid touching sacred objects.

Local Practices

Fishermen visit before voyages to pray for calm seas and safe returns. Locals also come here to seek health, peace, and prosperity. Offerings often include incense, fruit, and flowers, placed at the altars.

Dinh Cậu Festival

Held annually on the 15th and 16th day of the 10th lunar month, the festival gathers large crowds for ceremonies, offerings, and cultural activities. It is one of the island’s most important spiritual events, celebrating the sea and praying for abundant catches and favorable weather.
